about self-pollination, cross-pollination and artificial-pollination |

How do they make their seeds?
Japanese morning glories normaly get their seeds by themselves.
In the evening of the day before they bloom: The pistil is longer than the stamens. |
From the midnight to the early morning just before they bloom: The stamens glow slowly and when they get higher than the pistil, the pistil gets the pollen. It is called "self-pollination". |
|
When people want to do artificial pollination? These are the problems we have with JMGs.
Problem 1: | When you compost too much, they may have less pollen than usual. |
Problem 2: | When the temperture is too high, it is also the cause of less pollen. |
Problem 3: | JMGs are easily get cross-pollinated. If you glow several JMGs together and if you really
want the same flower next year as you have this year, it is better to do
artificial pollination. Or you can also try to meke YOUR ORIGINAL JMGs to do artificial pollination! |
How to do artificial-pollination #1 (self-pollination)
OR | 1: Tie the head part of the JMG bud with a fine thread which you want to
make seeds the day before so that it can not bloom next morning. Do not
tie too tight. Or you can make a small paper cap and put it on the bud, instead of tying. |
2: Open the flower gently. If the flower won't open easly, blow slowly into the flower. Pick up the anther with tweezers and put it on the pistil.
3: Close the flower and tie it again to avoid cross-pollination by insects. Be careful not to damage the pistil. Mark it with a string or so, then you can tell which one you did artificial pollination when they get seeds. |
